How Long Is The Service Life Of The Steel Structure?

Steel structure edges other types because it has various enduring good qualities. One of those is its strength against elements that can last for years. But how long is it? If you are a house buyer or building owner, you may wonder about the life span of your steel structure. Is your investment worth it? Is it a building that can provide shelter for decades?

Generally speaking, the service life of a steel structure is about 50 years. However, it can also reach more than 100 years. It is possible; if the steel structure has an excellent design and efficient construction process.

To get a better picture of how possible a steel structure can last that long. It is good to check the qualities of this that determine its lifespan.

Strength against damaging agents – Steel is a solid and durable material that can withstand wear and tear. It is why it is a material for constructing buildings and other large structures.

Note that steel can also eventually succumb to wear and tear. However, there are ways to prolong life and make steel more resistant to wear and tear. A way to do this is by using a coating or finish that can help protect the steel from damage.

A few examples of these are zinc-rich primers, powder coating, and hot-dip galvanizing. Zinc-rich primers are a type of paint that contains a high concentration of zinc. It can be a barrier between the steel and the elements, protecting the steel from corrosion. Powder coating is paint applied as a powder and then cured under high heat. This process creates a hard, durable finish that can withstand much abuse.

On the other hand, hot-dip galvanizing is a process in which the steel is dipped in hot zinc. Then, it creates a durable, corrosion-resistant coating that can help prolong the life of the steel.

Resistance to fire – A vast fire can affect a portion or possibly burn an entire building. It most likely happens if the structure is made of light materials and wood. Thus, it is good to use materials that have resistance against fire.

Steel is also very resistant to fire, meaning it will not easily catch or be damaged by fire. For this reason, it is suitable to use in buildings, especially in areas with a fire risk.

Can withstand severe weather conditions – Steel structures are less likely to be damaged or destroyed when a natural disaster strikes. These can withstand high winds, heavy rain, and other weather conditions.

Demand minimal maintenance and repair – Steel structures are low-maintenance. These are not susceptible to termites or insects that can damage wood buildings. And if these have proactive coatings, minimal care and attention are needed.

It is important to remember the lifespan of a steel structure is about its material quality, design, manufacture, construction, operation, and maintenance. It is good to be meticulous in these areas to ensure you can have a steel structure that can serve you for almost a lifetime.
